Press Release
Local Church to Host Conference on Pornography Epidemic
Glens Falls ministries partnering to bring in national speakers
Glens Falls, NY: On Saturday, April 22, 2017, two area organizations will host a one-day conference on the rising pornography epidemic: “Chains Be Broken: Understanding the Effects of Pornography and Working Towards a Solution.” The event will educate attendees on the physical, emotional, and spiritual dangers of pornography, with equal time spent discussing healing.
“Chains Be Broken” will take place at Church of the Messiah, 296 Glen Street, Glens Falls, and is co-sponsored by Healing Spring Christian Ministries. Doors open at 8:15 a.m. with presentations beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. After a dinner break, the day will conclude with a 7:00 p.m. concert at the Wood Theater, 207 Glen Street, Glens Falls. Tickets are $25 each for either the conference or the concert, or $45 for a discounted package. Pricing includes refreshments and lunch. To register visit chainsbebroken.weebly.com or call 518-792-1560.
Presenters will include Dr. William Struthers, Professor of Psychology at Wheaton College and the author of Wired for Intimacy: How Pornography Hijacks the Male Brain; and Jessica Harris, a blogger and the author of Beggar's Daughter: From the Rags of Pornography to the Riches of Grace. Musician Audrey Assad will speak during the day and perform the evening concert. Assad, the daughter of a Syrian refugee, is an author, speaker, producer, and critically lauded songwriter and musician.
“The event is for individuals, couples, parents, ministers, social workers, therapists, physicians, and more, not just for those who are struggling with pornography,” said Rev. Karl Griswold-Kuhn, who is pastor of Church of the Messiah and one of the event leaders. “No one’s going to ask why you signed up. But don’t stay away because it feels taboo or embarrassing. I witnessed my first pornographic images around the age of eight, and I can still remember the effect they had on me.”
Rev. Griswold-Kuhn has been joined in the effort by his wife, Jen, and by the Rev. Bruce and Shay Mason, co-founders of Healing Spring Christian Ministries, also in Glens Falls. Both couples are passionate about encouraging open, honest dialogue on difficult issues like pornography, and they hope that this event will not merely raise alarms but will also help spark conversations surrounding a healthy, comprehensive view of sex and marriage.
“It is heartbreaking that children are exposed to internet pornography at such a young age,” said Rev. Mason. “They are growing up believing this is normal, and research shows they’re struggling with relationships as adults. Unless we start doing something about this, we are putting their ability to develop loving and healthy relationships at great risk.”
The Church of the Messiah was founded in 1841 and is a parish in the Episcopal Diocese of Albany. Griswold-Kuhn has been the rector there since 2014. Healing Spring Christian Ministries was founded in 2012 and is an ecumenical and global Christian healing and prophetic prayer ministry.
